Literacy Committee

Norris Middle prides itself on building a culture of reading. One of the most influential clubs at NMS allows student representatives to create literacy-centered events for the community, have input on reading instruction within the school, read to elementary students, and build lifelong connections through the love of the written word. If you are an avid reader or want to become one, the Literacy Committee is for you! Student permission forms to join the Literacy Committee will be available on Senator Day; a digital copy can be found here.

Peer Buddy

Who can join? Any NMS student can apply

When does it meet? During scheduled Related Arts class time

Technology Student Association (TSA)

TSA is an extracurricular club focused on enriching students in concepts and experiences related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Members of this club at NMS will choose from a variety of project topics and work on their project throughout the fall semester. Students may attend a regional competition in January and may qualify to attend the state competition in March.

Tremont Club

Sixth grade students at Norris Middle School are invited to participate in the Tremont Club and overnight field trip to the Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont. In October these students will prepare for the field trip and experience nature in their own backyard by hiking from NMS to the Norris Observation Point. In November they will spend three days and two nights at the Tremont campus in the Smokies. While on this trip, students will reinforce life science concepts learned in the sixth grade science classroom through outdoor lessons like Stream Ecology and Salamander Investigations.

When does it meet? Parent meeting in September, student hike to Norris Observation Point in October, overnight field trip November 13 – 15, 2024

VEX IQ Robotics

Students participating in this class will work in teams to design, build, and program a VEX IQ robot. Students will compete with their robots in an NMS robotics competition in December and May. The top three teams at the December NMS competition will have the opportunity to compete in the Tennessee TSA VEX IQ robotics competition in March.
