The Broadcasting Senator Time Class is an introductory class to journalism where students will participate in editing, video skills, and interviews. The culminating goal and project will be for students to create, film, and edit Friday announcements for Norris Middle School.
Who can join? 6th-grade students can apply; applications will be dispersed on Senator Day and can also be found at Broadcasting Class Application.
When does it meet? Senator Time Class

The NMS Book Club is a student book club for all NMS students. Each year, the students read a series, exploring past series such as Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and The Mysterious Benedict Society. At meetings, we discuss the themes and characters of the sections we have read. In addition, we play related games and make crafts connected to the books. This club allows students to socialize with friends while celebrating the fun of reading!
Who can join? All NMS students are welcome to join!
When does it meet? The first and third Thursday of each month

Norris Middle prides itself on building a culture of reading. One of the most influential clubs at NMS allows student representatives to create literacy-centered events for the community, have input on reading instruction within the school, read to elementary students, and build lifelong connections through the love of the written word. If you are an avid reader or want to become one, the Literacy Committee is for you! Student permission forms to join the Literacy Committee will be available on Senator Day; a digital copy can be found at Literacy Committee Permission Form.

TSA is a Senator Time club focused on enriching students in concepts and experiences related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Members of this club at NMS will choose from a variety of project topics and work on their projects throughout the fall semester. Students may attend a regional competition in January and may qualify to attend the state competition in March.
Who can join? All NMS students are invited to apply.
When does it meet? During Senator Time and monthly meetings after school on the third Monday of each month. The first meeting of the 2025 school year is September 15.

Sixth grade students at Norris Middle School are invited to participate in the Tremont Club and overnight field trip to the Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont. In October, these students will prepare for the field trip and experience nature in their own backyard by hiking from NMS to the Norris Observation Point. In November they will spend three days and two nights at the Tremont campus in the Smokies. While on this trip, students will reinforce life science concepts learned in the sixth-grade science classroom through outdoor lessons like Stream Ecology and Salamander Investigations.

UTRUST is a staff appreciation organization that allows students to serve as leaders at Norris Middle. If accepted, 6th-8th graders will work with student leaders (President, Vice-President, and Secretary), under the facilitation of two teachers.
UTRUST member responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Planning school-wide events
- Leading teacher appreciation celebrations monthly
- Helping plan spirit weeks, dances, and other student activities
- Leading and helping plan 5th-grade visits at the end of the school year.
Who can join? All NMS students are invited to apply; applications can be found at the 2025 UTRUST CLUB Permission Form.
When does it meet? Meetings occur on the fourth Thursday of the month in the 8th-grade conference room from 3:30 – 4:30, along with bi-weekly Senator Time planning sessions. The first meeting will be on August 14th.

The Yearbook Committee is a group of creative, self-motivated, and responsible students who work together to design and produce the school yearbook. Members help capture memories, take photos, write captions, and organize content to create a lasting record of the school year.
Who can join? This opportunity is open to students in 7th and 8th grade who are interested in design, layout, writing, and photography. We have a set of requirements for the students to be chosen to be members of the team. Applications will be dispersed during Senator Day and the first couple weeks of school.
When does it meet? Daily during Senator Time class
